Mammo on the Go

Mammo on the Go

UNC Health Pardee is pleased to introduce Mammo on the Go, a Department of Pardee Hospital, a mobile mammography unit offering the same state-of-the-art, digital 3D breast imaging that is available at the breast center.

The bus is staffed by female mammography technologists who are specially trained and certified in breast imaging, and all images are interpreted by board-certified radiologists. Mammo on the Go is now on the road visiting businesses, organizations, and special events across Western NC.

The best part is that you never have to sacrifice time, quality, or our full-service care. Whether it’s on-site or on the bus, if there is an issue detected from your exam, our team provides follow-up and scheduling for any imaging that may be needed.

If you are interested in having the mobile mammography unit visit your place of business, please request a Mammo on the Go site visit.

Eligibility RequirementsMammo on the Go

Patients eligible for mobile mammography screening must:

  • Be 40 years of age or older
  • Have a referring provider to accept results
  • Not be pregnant or currently breastfeeding
  • Not have any new breast symptoms or problems
  • Not have had a mammogram in the last 12 months
  • Be able to get on and off the bus independently

Appointment Process and Experience

You will arrive at your pre-scheduled time and be met by one of our Mammo on the Go staff members. Plan to bring a photo ID, insurance card(s) and the name, address, and phone number of your referring provider. You will be asked to provide the facility name and location of any previous breast imaging.

You will then be directed to a private dressing room and asked to change into a gown from the waist up. Plan to wear a two-piece outfit so that you can easily undress above the waist. Do not use any deodorant, powders, lotions, or ointments, which may interfere with the x-rays.

Next, the 3D digital mammogram will be performed. Generally, two images of each breast will be taken, and the process is approximately 10-15 minutes. This is the same exam and quality of imaging that is provided at our hospital site.

At the end of the business day, all studies are digitally transmitted to Pardee for interpretation by our radiologists. Reports will be sent to your designated provider and posted in MyUNC Chart. You will also be sent a letter concerning your results.

Follow-Up Care

Patients with an abnormal mammogram may require further diagnostic testing such as additional mammographic views or a breast ultrasound. If so, you will be contacted by a member of our breast imaging team to arrange a follow-up visit at Pardee’s breast center. Your provider will be notified about all results and if additional testing is needed.

Billing and Insurance

Considered preventive care, screening mammograms are covered by most insurance carriers. Due to the variation within different benefits plans, you should check with your insurer for confirmation of coverage. Those without insurance are encouraged to contact Pardee’s financial counselors at (828) 698-7306 to find out if they are eligible for a financial assistance program.
