Southeastern Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Welcomes Surgeons Dr. Corey Beals and Dr. J. Gregory Mawn
UNC Health Pardee is expanding its orthopedic services by adding two fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons, Corey Beals, M.D. and J. Gregory Mawn, M.D. to Southeastern Sports Medicine and Orthopedics, a department of Pardee Hospital. The addition of Drs. Beals and Mawn exemplify Pardee’s focus on providing the community with highly-trained specialists who prioritize faster recovery times and lower risk levels for all surgeries. With a robust clinical staff, Southeastern serves the community by offering six convenient locations across the region in Arden, Asheville, Hendersonville and Brevard.
As a United States Air Force Veteran and board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Beals had the opportunity to care for all types of operators in the military which gave him experience in dealing with a variety of athletic and chronic injuries. “I strive to listen to each patient and come up with a mutually agreed upon plan to best fit their life and expectations,” Dr. Beals said. “If surgery is needed, I ensure the optimal technique and rehab are implemented to get them back to doing what they love.”
Dr. Beals earned his medical degree from Ohio State University and completed an internship and residency at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. He pursued a fellowship in orthopedic sports and shoulder surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Beals has a special interest in shoulder replacement, rotator cuff repair, ACL tears, knee ligament injuries, cartilage restoration, meniscal tears, knee arthritis and orthopedic fractures. “I enjoy guiding my patients through treatment strategies that will greatly improve their symptoms, whether that be a minimally invasive arthroscopic technique or replacement,” Dr. Beals said. When he is not seeing patients he enjoys hiking, kayaking, playing sports, watching Ohio State football and spending time with his family.
Dr. Mawn earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He pursued a fellowship in adult reconstruction at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “I have had the incredible privilege to train at some of the finest institutions in the country and strive to deliver everything I know to the care of my patients,” Dr. Mawn said. “My goal is to understand my patient's values and goals and design a care plan to achieve these goals as quickly as possible and with minimal disruption to their life.” Dr. Mawn has a special interest in accelerated recovery after total joint replacement, partial knee replacement, direct anterior hip replacement, peri-operative pain management and revision hip and knee replacement. When he is not treating patients, Dr. Mawn enjoys hiking with his dog, skiing, mountain biking, fly fishing and spending time with his family.
