Pardee UNC Health Care Introduces Robotic Navigation Platform for Spinal Surgery into Orthopedics Program
Pardee UNC Health Care recently introduced spine robotic guidance and navigation into their Orthopedics program. ExcelsiusGPS® developed this platform technology to improve safety and accuracy by bringing an even greater level of precision to surgeons performing spine surgery. The first surgery was successfully performed on Monday, Aug. 3 by Dr. Keith Maxwell, Orthopedic Surgeon with Southeastern Sports Medicine and Orthopedics, a department of Pardee UNC Health Care., with several others scheduled in the coming week with Dr. John Hicks, Orthopedic Surgeon with EmergeOrtho/Blue Ridge Bone & Joint.
Spine surgeons with both Southeastern Sports Medicine and Orthopedics and EmergeOrtho/Blue Ridge Bone & Joint have been trained to use the technology and are now performing minimally invasive back and spine procedures at Pardee Hospital. With this robotic guidance and navigation platform, spine procedures may result in less blood loss, less muscle damage, and faster recovery. In addition, the technology provides improved visualization of patient anatomy throughout the procedure to help optimize patient treatment.
“This state-of-the-art robotic navigation technology is revolutionary for surgeons and patients by giving us the opportunity to perform surgery more accurately, with more efficiency, and ultimately with more safety,” said Dr. Maxwell. Dr. Hicks notes that “the robotic arm aligns tools along a planned pathway, improving accuracy of screw placement and ultimately optimizing patient care. It’s a real game changer for patients and the surgical team.”
The system is designed to streamline the surgical workflow and reduce radiation exposure to surgeons and staff. This robotic navigation platform is the world’s first technology to combine a rigid robotic arm and full navigation capabilities into one adaptable platform for accurate trajectory alignment in spine surgery. “We are committed to providing the highest level of quality care for our patients and staff,” said James M. Kirby, II, president and CEO for Pardee UNC Health Care. “Pardee is more than pleased to be able to offer this new technology to our community.”
